How to Interpret Tongues

In the Christian tradition, God often reveals His presence through giving people the experience of speaking in tongues. When a message is delivered in tongues, it takes a person with a special gift to interpret the message and make it available to others.

    Instructions

      • 1

Reflect upon the message given in tongues. This may be your own message, or it may be another's message.

      • 2

Understand the difference between translation and interpretation. When you interpret tongues, you're not translating the message from one language to another. Instead, you're seeking the interpretation of tongues. So the message it provides may not seem to match the length of the tongues.

      • 3

Pray to be given interpretation, either of your private prayers or a public message. A simple prayer request opens you to the interpretation of tongues if you are meant to interpret them.

      • 4

Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your interpretation. Only those given the gift of interpreting tongues can interpret them, so it's not something you can learn. You have to wait for inspiration.

      • 5

Share the interpretation with other believers. Beyond providing you with comfort, the goal of messages delivered in tongues and then interpreted is to give comfort and inspiration to others through your worship of and communion with God.

    Tips & Warnings

    • If you don't receive inspiration to interpret tongues, you probably have a different spiritual gift. Stay open to the other potential spiritual gifts you might have rather than becoming frustrated that you can't interpret tongues.

You don't Understand the Bible. God never said you to not speak in tongues and if thats what you believe you must be a baptist. God would never give us something we don't need. Stay in the word more and do more studying on it and ask God to open the word to you. So you may know first hand due to your Holy Spirit what the actual benefits are.

So if there is no interpreter and you are edifying only yourself, WHY is everyone speaking in tongues, when God, in His Word, told you not to?!? I don't believe Speaking in Tongues belongs anywhere except in your private prayer life, in your closet...if anywhere. And I question why anyone would desire to speak in tongues if they can't interpret what they are saying...you know the Devil speaks in tongues too...if you can't understand what you are saying, how do you know it's coming from the right spirit???

1 Corinthians 14:2-5 "For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, be he who prophesies edifies the church." 1 Corinthians 14:27-28 "If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God." Excuse me: but two or three at the most...in turn...that means one at a time! and with an interpreter...if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent...so why, if there is no interpreter, is everyone speaking in tongues??? verse 14:4 says you edify nobody but yourself...verse 14:26 says "...Let all things be done for edification." So if...
