How to Play He Said, She Said

"He said, she said." More than just a phrase, this was the title of a game show hosted from 1969 to 1970 by Joe Garagiola. In essence a celebrity version of "The Newlywed Game," "He Said, She Said" featured celebrity couples playing for members of the studio audience. Mark Goodson and Bill Todman would revise the format and bring it back several years later as "Tattletales," hosted by Bert Convy.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the wives in an isolation area.

    • 2

Read the husbands a statement designed to elicit details of their relationship with their wives, such as "A picture you shouldn't have taken." Each husband raises his hand; the first three to do so give a one- or two-word response, then elaborate by giving the story behind that response.

    • 3

Establish contact with the wives in the isolation area. Ask the question to the wives, giving one of the husband's responses, randomly chosen.

    • 4

Have the wives buzz in with their interpretation of the response. If the correct wife buzzes in first, and her story matches her husband's, add 25 points to the couple's original stake of 100. If her story doesn't match, deduct 10 points from the couple. If the wrong wife buzzes in, deduct 10 points from her team and the team whose clue was read. Give the remaining responses, having the wives buzz in and scoring as above.

    • 5

Repeat Steps 2 through 4, then have the wives and husbands change places. Repeat Steps 2 through 4 twice more, this time reading the question to the wives and having the husbands try to match stories.

    • 6

End the game with a final question, this time taking a response from only the first wife to raise her hand and having the husbands try to match it.

    • 7

Award a prize for the team with the highest score and lesser prizes to the remaining teams. On the original show, the top prize was $250 and a week's stay at a Holiday Inn for the couple in the audience the celebrities played for, while the runners-up received $100.

Tips & Warnings

  • These rules were modified for the original run of "Tattletales" by having only three couples and buzzers on both the stage and in the isolation area. Only the first spouse to buzz in to give the story to be matched could do so and could either give a one-word clue for $100 or a two-word clue for $50. The team that won the most money received a $1,000 bonus; all money was divided among the audience members in the couples' rooting sections. These rules were later scrapped in favor of the "quickies" that were part of the original game, where all three couples were asked to predict their partners' responses to a question, such as "You're on a desert island for six months. Would you rather spend the time reading or writing?"

  • One source of questions for "He Said, She Said" is the board game "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus." Another is the home version of "The Newlywed Game."
