Step 1
Remember that entering a body of water is safe as long as you or a youngster are in control. To be in control requires swimming face up and being in a location in the pool where you feel comfortable.
-
Step 2
Relax when you enter the pool. You will recover and go into a position of face up while lying on your back in the water.
-
Step 3
Roll over on your back, keeping your head and face in the water to a point you can breathe, and imagine you are floating.
-
Step 4
Spread your arms and legs out like a starfish. Keep your back straight in the water as much as possible. Try not to get stiff or lock up into a ball or you will sink. Keep the concept of floating in mind. Once you are comfortable, you can kick and swim on your back.
-
Step 5
Finish kicking and swimming around in the water. Take a moment to stay calm, relax and smile, breathe and listen to the sounds of the water.
