Feeling at ease with your children around a pool and teaching them the technique to swim facing up is imperative for fun as well as survival in water. Swim facing up saves lives and is an easy approach to learning how to swim. The following steps describe how to swim facing up.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that entering a body of water is safe as long as you or a youngster are in control. To be in control requires swimming face up and being in a location in the pool where you feel comfortable.

  2. Step 2

Relax when you enter the pool. You will recover and go into a position of face up while lying on your back in the water.

  3. Step 3

Roll over on your back, keeping your head and face in the water to a point you can breathe, and imagine you are floating.

  4. Step 4

Spread your arms and legs out like a starfish. Keep your back straight in the water as much as possible. Try not to get stiff or lock up into a ball or you will sink. Keep the concept of floating in mind. Once you are comfortable, you can kick and swim on your back.

  5. Step 5

Finish kicking and swimming around in the water. Take a moment to stay calm, relax and smile, breathe and listen to the sounds of the water.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learning how to swim facing up can be easy if you have someone holding your back up in the water the first time you try it.
  • Hold your child's back up in the water and tell him to keep his head and face in the water. Keep the face above the water just enough to breathe.
  • The human body is a naturally buoyant body mass because of the body fat and air in the lungs.
  • Swimming on your back with your face up is the safest way to get out of the pool if you fell in the pool by accident and can't swim.
  • Don't swim alone--always swim with a friend.
  • If you don't know how to swim and fall in a body of water, you can float on your back, and swim to the edge of the pool.
