Although it is called a compound miter cut, this cut is actually a bevel miter cut. It is compound in that the board will be cut at an angle in two ways: from the bevel as well as the miter gauge. This is a specialized cut that you will employ for very specific tasks only. Read on for instructions on making this cut.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Table saw
  • Wood
  1. Step 1

Remove the rip fence from the table and put the miter gauge in place.

  2. Step 2

Set the bevel to the angle you need it at by turning the hand wheel. Lock it in place.

  3. Step 3

Turn the knob on the miter gauge to place it at the correct angle for your project then lock it. Set the saw blade at the necessary height as well.

  4. Step 4

Switch on the saw and let the blade gain speed before inserting the workpiece.

  5. Step 5

Place the wood firmly against the miter gauge as you begin feeding the wood onto the blade.

  6. Step 6

Move the miter gauge forward slowly and steadily, making sure to keep the wood against it as you do so.

  7. Step 7

Continue pushing the miter gauge with the hand closest to the blade while feeding the wood with the other hand. Do this until the wood is cut through.

  8. Step 8

Turn off the saw and allow the blades to stop completely before removing the wood.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can try eliminating the need for the bevel altogether by keeping the saw blade at its regular angle and using a sled-type device to feed the wood through at the correct angle.
  • Stay to the side of the wood as you feed it onto the blade to prevent injury due to kickback.
