How to Be a Liberal Republican
In politics sometimes, it seems easy to categorize a person by their party affiliation. A Republican is conservative and a Democrat is liberal. That is too limiting and shortsighted. Party affiliation does not eliminate individual thought. Defying these stereotypes is not always easy, but that is what democracy is based on--freedom of thought and choice.

Trust in a women's right to choose. Roe vs. Wade was a landmark decision that gave a woman the right to choose her own destiny. This country's basic tenets are freedom and liberty. The Liberal Republican understands this and supports, defends and trusts in this right to choose.

Believe in evolution. Evolution while controversial in some areas of the Republican party, is not the hot button topic in liberal wing of the Republican party. Liberal Republicans accept the scientific evidence in this case.

Support stem cell research. Stem cell research has the possibility to save and extend millions of lives throughout the world. A liberal Republican believes in allowing science to determine its own course regardless of their personal beliefs on issues.

Protect the environment. With weather patterns becoming more and more erratic, the liberal Republican understands the importance of the environment to the survival of future generations. Environmental threats and concerns are to be one of the main topics in elections for the next generation or more.

Keep an open mind. Liberal Republicans understand that they may not have all the answers and that some questions are still unanswered. Too many politicians think that an issue is black and white. A liberal Republican realizes the nuances and grey areas that come with some issues.

The United Kingdom has this. It is their Liberal Democratic Party. The problem is that with a winner-take-all system, a country is screwed into having only 2 major parties, which forces everyone into being one extreme or the other. I could be a liberal democrat and vote Obama, or be a conservative republican and vote Perry, but sadly I will most likely not be able to vote for Ron Paul as sad as it is, because he will never win the nomination.

Liberal republicans basically are classic liberals (Jeffersonian democrats) that favor confederate government and economic neo-liberalism. All of those concepts can be found on wikipedia (the articles are accurate.) Its more of a posture than a set of beliefs. Paleo-liberalism is a mindset that can be used to find your own beliefs.

I don't understand how this makes one a liberal republican. All this article is saying is what makes up American post-liberalism. A liberal republican would be someone who supports economic neo-liberalism and wishes for state based politics to handle the social issues, while maintaining a politically secular view to issues that affect other groups than his own. Support for stem cell research, for example, is not always the most liberal option. Publically funded research administered by the DoH is antithetical to the concept of economic neo-liberalism so as far as subsidized support of programs, that would be considered liberal populism (which is what the democratic party represents), while prohibition of private research would be social conservatism (as represented by conservative republicans). The liberal republican's approach to stem-cell research would be deregulation of research and making it easy for private organizations or supernational groups like the WHO to do the research without legal intervention. That's just one example of how this is a biased article. Abortion? the liberal populist say fund it, conservatives say prohibit it, liberal republicans say it's fine but don't fund it publically. This article should have been titled "An Introduction into Modern Liberalism." This has nothing to do with the differences between a liberal republican (paleo-conservative) and a liberal democrat (liberal populist).
