Just a few years ago, sharing media over the Internet was but a pipe dream. The files were too big and the transfer rates too slow. Then BitTorrent software arrived and changed everything. Now sharing large files is very user friendly and simple. Downloading these BitTorrent files is just a few clicks away.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Decide which BitTorrent client software to use. There are many free options and some are more user friendly than others. For instance, some have Spanish language support while others do not.
Step2
Download and install the BitTorrent client software. After reviewing the pros and cons of the available software options, click on the link to download the software. Then follow the on screen options to install the software correctly.
Step3
Forward the port of the Internet router. While not necessary, this operation does make the BitTorrent client work more efficiently. Essentially a user needs to find the IP address and then login into the router management application using a web browser. The user then assigns a specific port for the BitTorrent application to use. Beware that some older or cheaper routers do not have this capability.
Step4
Find Internet sites that facilitate the transfer of BitTorrent files. Again there are plenty options available to download from. Some require registration to download the BitTorrent files. Be sure to check the sites legitimacy before downloading from it. Some sites are poorly managed and maintained. Downloads from these sites can contain virus and spyware.
Step5
Use the BitTorrent client to download the file. Once a reliable site is found, conduct a search on the site for a BitTorrent file to download. Choose the link that says "Download torrent" or something to that effect. Next, choose a location to place the file on the computer's hard drive. Normally during setup of the software, it will ask for a designated place to put all downloads.
Step6
Open the downloaded BitTorrent file. Sometimes, if it is a video file, it is difficult to open due to the many video formats available. A useful video software platform is VLC media player. The player plays almost every format available.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure to check the comments sections of each BitTorrent file before downloading. Often users will post in comments if there are problems or dangers with the BitTorrent file.
