Step 1
Dust your cedar chest regularly with a soft cloth to keep the finish clean and to prevent dirt build-up. If you have a vacuum with a soft bristle brush attachment, you can use it to clean dust from the inside of the chest.
-
Step 2
Remove the waxy build-up. Cedar chests, particularly new cedar chests, will develop a natural waxy build-up that should be removed with a gentle oil soap.
-
Step 3
Wax your cedar chest to help retain the natural beauty of the wood. Carnauba wax can help to fill in cracks and protect the finish of older chests. Always apply the wax with a soft cloth to avoid scratches and apply the wax with the grain of the wood, not against it. Buff the wax to prevent streaking, and always read the instructions carefully before starting.

Step 4
Keep your cedar chest in a room that has a fairly even temperature, as fluctuations in hot and cold, as well as excess humidity, can cause cracking or premature aging of the finish and may even cause joints to open. Always protect the surface from glasses and flower vases by placing coasters or plates underneath them.
