People living in a two or more storied building should have an emergency plan. The easiest way to have an alternate escape route is to purchase an emergency escape ladder. Escape ladders come in a variety of sizes and strengths and are designed to fit easily into your present décor.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Measure the depth and width of all windows where emergency escape ladders will be used. The ladder must fit snuggly and securely over the open window.

  2. Step 2

Decide if you want ladders that will permanently mount on the wall below the window or those that are put in place only when needed.

  3. Step 3

Consider purchasing an escape ladder for every room where people sleep, including guest rooms.

  4. Step 4

Search the Internet for companies selling emergency escape ladders.

  5. Step 5

Compare the ladders different companies offer. Ladders should accommodate more than one person descending at a time and hold at least 1000 pounds.

  6. Step 6

Look for ladders that deploy quickly and easily. Time is of the essence when escaping from a fire.

  7. Step 7

Make sure escape ladders are child friendly. Each person in the room needs to be able to open and deploy ladders easily.

Tips & Warnings
  • Even with emergency escape ladders in the home, every family needs to have an emergency evacuation plan. This plan should be well thought out and practiced by every member of the family.
  • Make and practice alternative plans in case access to escape ladders isn't available. Your plan should include a meeting place well away from the house where everyone can go and do a head count.
  • Be sure the ladders you purchase are long enough for children to reach the ground safely.
