How to Test Curling Iron Heat Elements

If you know how to test curling iron heat elements, it can save you time and money. It is very quick and easy. Most heating elements are known to be open/enclosed coil or open ribbon. They are made up of chrome alloy or nickel. Most elements cannot be repaired, but they usually can be replaced.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Turn off power to the appliance or device. Be sure that it is unplugged as well.
Step2
Disassemble the appliance or device to access the heating element.
Step3
Set the multimeter to the resistance scale (RX1).
Step4
Touch the multimeter probes to each end of the element. High resistance of many ohms displaying means that your heating element is just fine.
Step5
Replace a faulty heating element with one of the exact size, shape, power rating and resistance if a heating element is faulty.
Step6
Reassemble the appliance or device, and turn it on or plug it in to test it.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you can't remove the heating element to replace it, you probably need to replace the entire appliance.
  • If a heating element is broken, replace it with one that is exactly the same in power rating, shape and size.
  • If you are replacing a heating element, know its part number, size, resistance (in ohms), current capacity (in amps or amperes) and how much voltage it requires (120V or 240V).
  • You may order replacement parts from the manufacturer of your device. Check the user guide/manual for the correct part number.
  • Follow all safety precautions located within your operations manual regarding your product.
