How to Remove Ink Stains From Countertop

Removing an ink stain from a countertop can be a process of trial and error until you find something that works. A lot depends on the type of ink and the material of your countertop. As with most stains, the sooner it's discovered, the easier it'll be to remove.

Instructions

1. Spray the stain with a little hairspray, and scrub gently with a non-abrasive sponge. If it begins to lighten, spray a little more hairspray and keep working on it until it's gone.

2. Make a paste of baking soda and water, and gently scrub the mixture onto the stain. The mild abrasiveness of the baking soda may work the stain out of the finish of the countertop.

3. Soak a cotton ball with either rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover and rub it over the stain, using mild pressure. Rinse after a few minutes and see if the stain has disappeared.

4. Try one of the commercially available stain removers or special sponges designed to help remove problem stains.

5. Mix together a poultice, which is usually recommended for granite countertops. For ink stains, create a paste by mixing Methylene Chloride with clay such as Attapulgite. Spread it over the stain and tape over it with plastic wrap. Check for dryness in 12-24 hours; if it isn't dry, allow it to sit uncovered until it's completely dry. Scrape the poultice off, rinse and repeat the process if the stain isn't completely gone.
