Being a carnie is kind of like joining the circus. You move from town to town with a cast of colorful, but often seedy characters. Being a carnie allows you to see the world and often parts of the world you'd rather not see. If you're willing to take chances and have a sense of adventure, being a carnie might be right for you. Follow these steps to be a carnie.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Realize that carnival wages have always been low and still are. There are chances to work your way up the ladder, but responsibility may not be what you're looking for in carnie life.
Step2
Note that you will be working long hard hours if you are a carnie. You'll be dealing with lots of strangers so it's good if you relate well to people. The constant tearing things down, traveling and setting things back up again can become monotonous after awhile.
Step3
Know that carnies are notorious for being substance abusers and people of questionable background. You need to be willing to live with and make friends with these people in order to be a carnie.
Step4
Acknowledge the fact that carnival people are different now than carnies from the old days. In order to get hired with the new companies, you need to pass a drug and background check. This has created a new breed of carnies who are immigrants from other countries. They usually don't take to the carnie life and move on to something else after making a few bucks.
Step5
Experience a taste of carnie life by hanging around or even traveling with a carnival and talking to the carnies. Ask them what it's like. If you decide you want to go for it, ask to talk to the "boss."
Step6
Appreciate carnie life for what it is. You are always traveling somewhere without the feeling of being tied down. You can experience the never-ending feeling of chasing a dream over the horizon. It has a certain romance you can't find anywhere else.
