Domestic or international travel can be a great way to spend your retirement. Seniors can enjoy travel adventures without the responsibilities of raising children and the commitment of a fulltime job. Depending on your personal interests adventure travel options include organized tours of exotic locations, active excursions such as hiking, biking and scuba diving and volunteer vacations.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Analyze finances. Take into account the expense of the trip including airfare, lodging, meals, entertainment, and excursions. If money is tight set a budget and shop around for a good deal. It is better to over estimate how much money you will need in case unexpected expenses arise.

  2. Step 2

Gather ideas. Call a travel agent and explain you want to take an adventure vacation. Ask other seniors what types of travel they have done. Make a list of places you want to see or things you want to do such as go on a safari, cruise to Alaska and go dog sledding.

  3. Step 3

Decide what activities you enjoy. If you're active there are numerous adventure vacation destinations where you can bike, hike, rock climb, and scuba dive. For someone who loves to experience new things consider a trip to a country you have never been to before. Take into consideration if you enjoy the wilderness or luxury accommodations.

  4. Step 4

Evaluate specialty travel agencies. There are travel companies specifically for seniors. They can provide information on various types of adventure travel including safaris, tours, hikes and more.

  5. Step 5

Join a senior travel club. These are social clubs geared specifically to seniors who love to travel. It will give you the chance to travel with other people, make new friends and share tips and stories about adventure travel.

  6. Step 6

Book your trip. Plan some activities you will enjoy but also be open to trying new things. Do not fill every minute of your vacation with activities. Leave some free time to relax. Be spontaneous.

  7. Step 7

Take the road less traveled. Research places to visit that are not tourist attractions. Ask the locals for suggestions on places that may be interesting but not overcrowded. Keep in mind you should use caution and don't put yourself in a dangerous situation.
