Learning how to properly switch lanes is important for maintaining order in traffic. It lets people around you know what you are doing and when. By properly indicating and changing lanes safely you allow others time to react to your driving.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Locate your car's turning indicator. Most indicators are on or near the steering column.
Step2
Look in your rear view and side view mirrors for other motorists and traffic.
Step3
Check your blind spots. The blind spot on most cars is around the middle of the car, near the left and right rear doors. This is an crucial step that is often forgotten. It is also something that any driving instructor will be incredibly vigilant about. Forget to check your blind spots and you will probably not pass any driving test.
Step4
Press your turning indicator down to turn on the left blinkers, or right to turn on right blinkers. Most modern cars will indicate to you which direction your blinkers are set with a small blinking light on the console.
Step5
Scan the mirrors and blind spots again to double check to make sure you are clear to switch lanes.
Step6
Turn into the desired lane with caution and purpose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always make sure the turn signals work before starting your car. If your turn signals are not working, then you will not be able to indicate to other motorists that you are going to change lanes.
