Being kidnapped is a traumatic experience that can haunt a victim for the rest of her life. Once taken, a victim's main goal is to get out of the situation alive. While nothing can guarantee a safe outcome, there are a few things to remember that may help you get away from the kidnapper.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Cause a scene, safely. Struggle as much as you can without angering your kidnappers. Your goal is to alert the people around you that you're being abducted so they can call the authorities.

  2. Step 2

Relax during transportation. Calm yourself by paying close attention to where you're going and memorizing as much as you can about your surroundings and captors.

  3. Step 3

Talk to your captors. Make them think of you as a person rather than a thing. This will greatly increase your chances of staying alive during a kidnapping.

  4. Step 4

Beware of Stockholm Syndrome. Sometimes kidnapping victims will come to identify with their captors. Victims can even start to agree with captors. Avoid this by keeping a mental distance from your captors.

  5. Step 5

Look for a way to escape. Look for your captors' weaknesses or a way out of the place you're being held. Never try to escape unless you're absolutely sure you can make it.

  6. Step 6

Stay active. Work your mind and body as much as you can every day.

Tips & Warnings
  • During a kidnapping, remember that time is on your side. The longer you stay alive, the more likely it is that you'll be rescued.
  • Memorize everything you possibly can during a kidnapping. Try to learn the layout of the building and its location. Know the number of captors and what they look like. Give this information to the authorities after you are rescued.
  • Don't try to play the hero. Being loud, angry or uncooperative will only aggravate your captors during a kidnapping. That could lead to injury or death.
