If your interest in antique maps has become more than a passing hobby, consider joining an antique map society. Antique map societies offer great ways to network and to share common appreciation and interest in these historical documents with other antique map enthusiasts.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit websites dedicated to antique map societies (see Resources). Read over the details of the societies. Familiarize yourself with their history, what types of antique maps they collect and membership requirements. Review member biographies and interests. If the antique map society has members who have published articles about antique maps, consider reading them.

  2. Step 2

Submit your name for mailing lists. Receiving newsletters from different antique map societies gives you a better idea of how each particular map society works. Important dates or events are often marked. Review these dates to look for antique map society meetings, symposiums, lectures, map fairs, trips and more.

  3. Step 3

Compare the antique map societies. Many societies specialize in the procuring and maintaining of certain antique maps. Often, antique map societies concentrate on a particular aspect of the antique map such as a theme, a world event, a specific cartographer or a time in which the maps were created. Be sure to consider an antique map society that meets your needs as much as you meet theirs.

  4. Step 4

Decide on an antique map society to join. Choose an antique society that is international or based in the United States. If you are interested in an antique map society that is located in the United States, you may be able to find societies that are in or are close to your city or region.

  5. Step 5

Contact the head of the antique map society that you are interested in joining. Inquire about membership requirements and dues.

  6. Step 6

Get an invitation to join the antique map society.

  7. Step 7

Check the antique map society's official calendar. Fit their next meeting into your schedule.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be intimidated by antique map society members. Many of them enjoy sharing their love for antique maps with new members, no matter how unfamiliar the new member is with antique maps.
