Curious kids often get bored with their toys and want to have something new to play with, and girls and boys alike have a lot of fun when creating crafts projects. One of the easiest ways for kids to create fun crafts is with rudimentary sewing. Lacing and basic stitching are the only skills kids need for a variety of beginner sewing projects.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Felt pieces, assorted colors
  • Safety scissors
  • A hole punch
  • Yarn, assorted colors
  • Markers or paint pens
  • Glue
  • Buttons
  • Ribbons
  1. Step 1

Pick out a shape you like from clip art or coloring books, or draw your own. Some ideas are a doll or gingerbread man, teddy bear, butterfly, car, or flower.

  2. Step 2

Trace the shape onto the felt and cut it out of two felt pieces.

  3. Step 3

Punch holes all around the edge of the felt pieces.

  4. Step 4

Lace the yarn through the holes. You can lace the yarn through from the same direction every time and have the yarn wrap around the edge, or lace it alternating front and back.

  5. Step 5

Leave a small space open to stuff the shape with cotton balls, crumpled paper or other stuffing material.

  6. Step 6

Finish lacing the shape closed, tie a knot or bow in the yarn, and decorate the shape with markers or paint pens.

  7. Step 7

For a more challenging project, sew or glue buttons and ribbons onto the shape. This might be easier before lacing the shapes together, but can be done at any stage.
