How to Celebrate Gay Pride on Campus

Gay pride means different things to different people. It can be a celebratory expression of who you are or a way to festively show your support for those you love. There is no better place to celebrate gay pride than on campus, so have fun and express yourself.

1. Organize a gay pride parade on campus and invite the entire community. Select campus comities to create floats and march in the parade. You can incorporate different campus organizations that celebrate diversity, to help organize. Be sure to promote the event well in advance and inspire people to dress up.
2. Invite your local PFLAG group (Parents, Friends and Families of Lesbians and Gays) to host a campus event, such as a gay and lesbian film festival. PFLAG is an extremely active organization in gay pride events all over the country and will happily get involved on your campus.
3. Urge the campus law center to host a conference about gay and lesbian rights in the United States. The National Lesbian and Gay Law Foundation often funds and presents these conferences, so contact them for more information.
4. Celebrate National Coming Out Day, usually set for the first or second week of October. Started by The Human Rights Campaign Foundation's "Coming Out Project," the yearly event is meant to empower gays and lesbians to live honestly and openly. Celebrate by creating buttons that read, "Out and Proud," passing out rainbow flags and decorating the campus with rainbows.
5. Hold a workshop for people who want to know how to be a better friend or ally to the gay and lesbian community. Teach the community, students and faculty ways that they can address and prevent hate crimes and promote the acceptance of diversity on campus.
