How to Become a Youth Pastor

Becoming a youth pastor takes a level of commitment not found in other types of ministry. The youth pastor is someone who loves kids, has a passion for ministry and doesn't mind being available no matter what his or her teens are facing. Being a teenager in today's society is challenging. Becoming a youth pastor to teens starts with a good education.

1. Research undergraduate programs with a focus on youth ministry.

2. Apply to the college of your choice and begin completing your undergraduate requirements.

3. Take advantage of internships during the summer. Having an opportunity to work with an experienced youth pastor can be a great learning tool.

4. Volunteer to work with an area youth group at a church while still an undergraduate. This will give you insight into the regular workings of a youth program during the year.

5. Begin sending out your resume to area churches you know are looking for a youth pastor in the coming months. Do this all during your senior year of college.

6. Interview for youth pastor positions at churches you think would be a good fit for you.

7. Continue your education in seminary after getting your first job as a youth pastor.

• Many people think of the youth pastor as a stepping stone to another position. The youth pastor position at any church is a vital and important role. Be committed to that roll and choose programs of study that will really groom you to be a qualified youth pastor.
• Find churches that have a full time youth pastor position available and are committed to a growing and healthy youth ministry. Be sure your first experience as youth pastor won't be the first position to go should there be budget cuts.
