Yaw is a term used to help maintain control of an airplane. It's important for every pilot to understand pitch, roll and yaw. To yaw an airplane, you cause its nose to move back and forth, from left to right. It's a complex move that requires training and skill.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

Enroll in a flight school. To yaw an airplane, you must fully understand how to operate a plane. And because it can be risky to yaw, you should know what to do in the event of an emergency. Learn how to handle a plane if it goes out of control and hope you never have to use it.

  2. Step 2

Define the three dimensional coordinates of the plane. There is the lateral axis, the vertical axis and the longitudinal axis. The intersection of these three coordinates determines the center of gravity for the plane. Longitudinal is called pitch, lateral is called roll and the vertical axis is called yaw.

  3. Step 3

Study how to control the airplane using pitch, roll and yaw. You can use the elevators, ailerons and rudders to maintain control.

  4. Step 4

Find the foot pedals. These are connected to the rudder of the tail section. The rudder is what's used to move the vertical part of the tail from side to side.

  5. Step 5

Deflect the rudder to yaw. Apply pressure to the left rudder pedal to move the nose of the airplane to the left. Then, apply pressure to the right rudder pedal to move the nose of the airplane to the right. Done over and over again, the nose of the plane will continue to move side to side.
