A depth sounder is an instrument that sends signals through the bottom of a boat. These signals bounce off the bottom of the water body you are navigating, come through a transmitter and let you know how deep the water is under your boat.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Decide how much information you want from the instrument when you look to buy a depth sounder. The easiest to use models are digital and simply tell you the water depth numbers. If all you want is to know how deep the water is, these small ones are the kind you need. You'll also find that they are the most economical.

  2. Step 2

Buy a depth sounder by comparing prices on the more elaborate models. You can find depth sounders that give a wide range of information. Some will show you when schools of fish are passing under your boat, the temperature of the water and the distance of the fish from your boat. Some depth sounders will show pictures of the actual bottom of the lake, river or ocean and you can see objects such as shipwrecks clearly identified.

  3. Step 3

Look at the most sophisticated models and you'll see depth sounders that come with built-in GPS devices so that you can always locate your position on the water. These are great to prevent getting lost when you are out in your boat. Some of these models will even show you what things look like under water ahead of your boat, not just underneath.

  4. Step 4

Buy a depth sounder at sporting goods stores, discount stores that have a sporting goods department and marinas. Boat houses and marinas are usually the best place to find the more elaborate models.

  5. Step 5

Consider buying a second-hand depth sounder if you want to save money. Sometimes you can find an older, used model at a pawn shop for a great price. But be wary of buying used depth sounders when there is no way to test them to make sure they work. You can also buy both new and used depth sounders online, but again, be wary about used ones you can't test.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you look to buy a depth sounder, there's a wide price range. You can pay a couple of hundred dollars or several thousand, depending on the features you want.
