Retirement closes one aspect of life but offers a new adventure for the next phase. Consider the retirement speech as closure, but not an ending. The occasion brings mixed emotions from friends and loved ones, but remains a celebration of passing.

    Instructions

      • 1

Think how you want the speech to flow and the kind of mood. Include a few jokes in good taste, but mostly offer sincerity in your words for the years and friendships that developed.

      • 2

Make a list comparing differences between the time of hiring and retirement. Focus on the big picture noting changes you witnessed: growth, products and people.

      • 3

Write personal accomplishments gained from your service including promotions, awards and charitable or civic events sponsored by the workplace.

      • 4

Consider people who made a positive impact on your working years and single them out for kind remarks. Perhaps it was a co-worker, staff member, someone in supervision, outside family and friends and especially those in attendance.

      • 5

Note retirement goals, trips, new living location, charitable or faith participation involving you and include family or others involved with the plans.

      • 6

Prepare a short closing, thanking those who came and anyone who helped prepare the occasion for celebrating your retirement party.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Allow five to seven minutes for delivery.

    • Keep the contents positive.
