How to Start a 4-H Dog Obedience Club

A 4-H dog obedience club is a great way to get involved with children and teach them the importance of responsible pet ownership. And, their dogs will benefit from learning basic obedience commands. Follow these steps to start a 4-H dog obedience club.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact your county extension agency for detailed information on how to start the club. Different county agencies may have their own regulations or necessary paperwork for starting a club. Your county extension agent can give you the specific requirements for your region.

    • 2

Talk with parents in your community and inform them of your plans. Put an ad in the newspaper or post an announcement at local schools to encourage club participation. Attend area kennel club meetings and give members information on your new 4-H club to take home to their children.

    • 3

Ask your county extension agent if they provide any materials related to dog obedience training. If so, be sure to order enough supplies for all of your club members. If they don't offer such materials, your agent can recommend other resources.

    • 4

Make sure you have the proper knowledge and experience to give instruction on dog obedience. If you don't, enlist the help of someone who does. Contact your local kennel club or pet store and ask if they have someone qualified and willing to provide lessons.

    • 5

Organize an exhibition or competition for your club. After members have completed their training activities, they should be rewarded with a chance to show what they've learned. Again, check with your county extension agent to determine whether or not any organized 4-H competitions are already scheduled. If not, put together one of your own. Remember to notify your club members, determine rules, identify the different classes in the competition, secure judges and provide rewards.
