Things You'll Need:
- Variety of deer calls
-
Step 1
Buy a good quality deer call. Different deer calls work on different deer. A call for a buck would probably not work as well as for a doe. Ask local expert hunters for a recommendation on what call they use.
-
Step 2
Learn the proper calls. The age and sex of the deer play an important part in the success rate of the calling. Choosing the proper call for the season is also a key to potential success.
-
Step 3
Practice the calls over and over. Head out into the field and try to call in a few deer. This is the only way a hunter knows for certain that their calling techniques work. Learning how to call a deer into the proper killing range before the hunt reduces the chances for a disappointing hunt.
-
Step 4
Choose a good location for calling to deer. Getting the right position to call from greatly increase the success of deer calling. Try to find a spot with enough cover to stay hidden but not so much vegetation that a clear shot can't be taken.
-
Step 5
Call to the deer in short bursts. Do not call to the deer repeatedly for 15 or 20 minutes, as deer do not do this naturally. The goal of deer calling is to imitate the natural sounds of the deer, so perform a 30-second series of calls and wait for 15 to 20 minutes to make another call.
