How to Classify Boat Sizes

In order to determine the various sizes of sailboats, remember that bigger does not always mean better. Larger boats may have trouble maneuvering in the harbor or might need extra crew. Smaller boats are often cheaper but easier to maintain.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify up to 7-meter cruisers by the number of seats. They are the smallest vessels. Power is usually provided by oars or an outboard motor. Maximum capacity is usually two occupants.

    • 2

Determine a 7- to 10-meter vessel by the potential number of occupants. The maximum capacity of a 7-meter boat is generally four and a 10-meter boat can hold up to six passengers. These boats also include a galley, with a sink, stove and bathroom facilities.

    • 3

Identify a 10- to 14-meter boat by the double birth cabins and suites below deck. Luxury facilities are also seen on these boat types. The equipment on these boats is larger, and heavy winds are required to put wind in the sails.

    • 4

Identify a boat over 14 meters as a luxury cruising vehicle. These boats often have wheels rather than the tillers found on smaller vessels. Long distance and ocean sailing is possible with these size boats.

    • 5

Remember sailboats can also be classified by hull configuration, purpose, number of masts, sail plan or keel type. These different classifications types are all common in yachting.
