Step 1
Find a tide chart for the area that you are in. Tide charts can frequently be found at marinas and docks.

Familiarize yourself with the way that the information on the tide chart is organized. You will see a list of high tide and low tide times. These are important for knowing how high the water is at a given time during the day.

Find the two high tides on the tide table. Each day there are two high tides and two low tides. If you want to know the time of the first high tide of the day, then you need to use the first high tide time listed on the tide chart. If you need to know the later high tide time, then look at the second high tide listed on the chart.

Step 4
Note the water's level when it's at high tide. This is the highest that the water will be all day.

Step 5
Note the water's level when it's at low tide. During this time the largest amount of land is exposed. This can be the only time for finding certain sea creatures that are left behind on the shore until the tide comes back in.
