The beams for a patio overhead are one of the essential framing elements of a secure patio installation. Installing the patio overhead beams sounds a lot more difficult than it actually is. It simply requires cutting the boards correctly and attaching them to your home properly.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Circular saw
  • 4-inch by 4-inch posts
  • Post-to-beam brackets or post cap
  • Jigsaw
  • Plywood template
  • Ladder or stepladder
  • Bolts and washers
  • Knee braces
  • Reciprocating saw
  1. Step 1

Trim your posts to the same level to make sure they're exactly the same length. Use a circular saw to cut the posts to the right length.

  2. Step 2

Install a post-to-beam connector or a post cap to the top of each of the beams. Make sure these connectors are installed securely.

  3. Step 3

Trim the beams to be the appropriate lengths.

  4. Step 4

Cut decorative shapes into the ends of the beams if you wish. Do this now, before you lift them into place. You can make a design by using a jigsaw and a piece of plywood to create a template. Then trace the template onto the end of the beam, and cut it with a reciprocating saw.

  5. Step 5

Put the beams into place by lifting the end of each beam onto a stepladder. Use a second stepladder to lift the end of the beam into the bracket on the top of the post. Do the same for both ends.

  6. Step 6

Bolt the beams securely into place with the post brackets.

  7. Step 7

Place knee braces securely on the outside corner posts.
