When you are building patio steps, one of the most important initial steps is properly measuring and planning your steps. This will help you determine how big to make your forms and how much cement you need to buy. If you have a proper measuring tape and a calculator, you should do just fine.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Calculator
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil and paper

Step1
Determine where you are putting your patio and where you are putting your patio steps. Draw an outline of your patio plan on a piece of paper. Place the dimensions that you measure on this piece of paper so you can properly compute your patio step measurements.
Step2
Use the standard height and width of steps so you and your guests won't be fooled when they walk on them. Standard height for a step is 6 inches. Standard width of a step is 15 inches.
Step3
Go to the spot where you are building your steps and imagine your steps attached. Take your tape measure to determine just how big you'd like your steps to be.
Step4
Determine how high your patio stairs need to go. This will go a long way in determining how many steps you need and how big your patio steps will ultimately be.
Step5
Divide the height of your patio steps by 6 inches per step. The answer is the number of steps that you need for your project.
Step6
Adjust your dimensions of your patio steps to fit the steps evenly.
