In kung fu, the cross stance is frequently used to deliver lower-torso strikes. While lowering the body of the fighter, this stance provides a great deal of stability. From this stance the fighter can quickly retreat or transition to a leg sweep and other low-leg attacks. Some styles may refer to the cross stance as the twisted stance.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start in an "A" stance or casual stance with your feet approximately shoulder length apart and hands at your side.

  2. Step 2

Spin your shoulders 180 degrees so that the left shoulder is over the right foot and vice versa. Strike with your right hand using a straight blow; you can use either a sun fist or a boulder fist.

  3. Step 3

Lower your knees while spinning to accomplish the stance and maintain balance. Weight distribution is kept even between the two feet the entire time.

  4. Step 4

Avoid leaning your head forward while entering the stance. Your back must be kept fairly straight because if your head is tipped forward, it will be an easy target for the opponent.

  5. Step 5

Raise the heel of your right foot and place your left foot firmly and flatly on the ground. The left foot should be perpendicular to your shoulders.

  6. Step 6

Maintain balance by raising or lowering your knees.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is assumed in these directions that your left hand is the lead hand and your right is the rear hand. This is the way a right-handed person would enter the stance to take advantage of the power of the right fist for the blow being thrown.
