The squelch control on a CB radio filters out interference from atmospheric conditions or chatter from nearby channels. The geography of your location can also cause interference during CB communication. Follow these tips to use the squelch control on a CB radio.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Locate the squelch control button on the CB radio. It is usually located next to the volume control and is the second button in, from the left.

  2. Step 2

Turn on the power of the CB radio and turn up the volume until you can hear operators speaking or squawking noises. If there is a lot of squawking or interference, adjust the squelch control.

  3. Step 3

Rotate the squelch control counterclockwise until it doesn't turn anymore.

  4. Step 4

Listen carefully. Make sure the music is off and windows are rolled up to minimize background noise. When the squelch control button is turned all the way, you should hear interference and hissing.

  5. Step 5

Turn the squelch control button slowly to the right, or clockwise. Continue listening as you turn the control button. When the squawking and hissing stop, continue to turn the squelch control button slowly until you pick up the channel you want.

  6. Step 6

Ask for a "radio check" if you have no squawking but can't hear anyone else on the radio. It's possible the channel isn't being used at that moment, so ask for a "radio check" before moving the squelch control button further.
