Instructions

Find a boxing gym or trainer. Look in the phone book under "Boxing Gyms." Talk to the owners of the gyms and find out what their program involves. Tell them how much you can afford to spend and what type of time you are willing to spend training. If you cannot find a boxing gym in your area, you can probably find a trainer at the USA Boxing site.

Get some basic boxing equipment. Lots of boxing gyms have equipment that can be borrowed, but it's a good idea to purchase your own handwraps and boxing gloves. If you buy 12-ounce boxing gloves, you can use them for bag work and initially for sparring. You won't need boxing shoes right away; sneakers are okay in the beginning. Shorts and t-shirts that aren't too tight will be good for working out.

Buy a plastic jump rope. This is an essential part of a workout program for boxing. Same with a speed bag--you'll need your own as well.

    • 4

Eat a healthy diet. This means eating a wide variety of foods that are not heavily processed and including lots of fruits and vegetables in your diet.

    • 5

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and after your boxing workouts.

    • 6

Sleep at least 8 hours every night. Boxing is more mental than physical, so it's important to be alert when you are fighting.

    • 7

Practice your punches every day. Even if you can't make it to the gym every day, it's important to practice so you will be confident and relaxed when you fight an opponent.
