Although boxing can be a dangerous sport, you can reduce your risk. Wearing the right protective gear and following these steps will keep you safer in the ring.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Handwraps
  • Boxing gloves
  • Mouthpiece
  • Headgear
  • Chest guard (for women)
  • Groin protector (for men and women)
  • Boxing shoes
  1. Step 1

Wrap your hands. If you are working with a trainer, this is the first thing he will do. Hand and wrist injuries can be painful and are difficult to heal, so wrapping your hands is very important for your safety.

  2. Step 2

Stretch and warm up before boxing; stretch and cool down afterwards. This will help prevent injuries. Anything from jumping rope to the speed bag will do.

  3. Step 3

Wear protective safety gear whenever you are fighting an opponent. This means face gear, an athletic supporter for guys, the proper footwear and a fitted mouthpiece.

  4. Step 4

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids before and after your boxing workout.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some gyms sell used equipment, but don't buy it if it looks too broken down. For example, don't buy used gloves if the padding around the knuckles is worn down.
  • In addition to protecting the teeth, a mouth guard also prevents cuts to the mouth and protect the jaw. When you clamp your teeth down on a mouth guard, you actually immobilize your jaw, which helps to prevent injury during impact.
  • Jumping rope is a great way to begin or end your workout. However, if you are jumping on a hard floor make sure you are wearing the proper shoes. Cross trainers work well and usually provide enough support and cushioning. If you don't protect your feet, you can end up with shin splints, Achilles tendonitis and other injuries.
