Proper footwork in boxing puts you in position to attack and defend. You must learn to keep your weight balanced and centered as you move in various directions. Follow these steps to learn proper boxing footwork.

From Quick Guide: Boxing 101
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand wraps
  • Boxing gloves
  • Boxing shoes
  1. Step 1

Get into position. If you are right-handed, your right foot should be behind you, and if you are left-handed your left foot should be in back.

  2. Step 2

Stand on the balls of your feet, but not too high on your toes. This will allow you to move easily while maintaining stability.

  3. Step 3

Move forward. Push off the ball of your back foot and move forward 1 half step with your front foot.

  4. Step 4

Move back. From your basic stance, push off with your front foot and step backward with your back foot 1 half step.

  5. Step 5

Go to the left and right. When moving left, push off the ball of your right foot and move your left foot 1 half step to the left. Push off with your left foot to move right.

  6. Step 6

Shuffle right and left. Your feet should be hip-width apart and parallel. Your shoulders squarely face your opponent. Shuffle to the left by pushing off with your right foot and stepping with your left. Shuffle to the right by pushing off with your left foot and stepping with your right. Change direction often.

  7. Step 7

Pivot. Get into boxing stance and shift your weight to the ball of your front foot. Push off your back foot and pivot on your front foot one-quarter turn to the right or left.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice footwork in front of a mirror and in the boxing ring.
  • Most right-handed boxers find it easier to step to the left. This is a good move if you're fighting a left-handed boxer because you are moving away from your opponent's power.
