A good boxer needs the right equipment, but what to buy? There are hundreds of choices for the new boxer. Follow these steps to build up your collection of boxing equipment as you advance in the sport.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jump rope
  • Boxing gloves
  • Handwraps
  • Boxing shoes
  • Chest protector (women)
  • Groin protector (men and women)
  • Mouthguard
  1. Step 1

Purchase handwraps. Handwraps are the most important piece of equipment in boxing because they will protect your knuckles and the delicate bones of your hands and wrists.

  2. Step 2

Buy a jump rope. Plastic ones are generally better than leather ones.

  3. Step 3

Get 12-ounce leather bag gloves for your daily workouts. Later you will purchase gloves for sparring and competition, but 12-ounce gloves are good for beginners.

  4. Step 4

Get a chest protector if you are a woman.

  5. Step 5

Make sure that you wear a groin protector to protect your hips and groin area when punches slip.

  6. Step 6

Choose a mouthguard that is comfortable for you. The mouthguard will protect your teeth and help you to avoid getting cuts on the inside of your mouth. When you are wearing a mouthguard, your jaw is immobilized; this also helps to prevent broken jaws and other injuries.

  7. Step 7

When you are ready to compete, purchase boxing shoes. They will help you to glide across the floor and move quickly. They are cut high, so they also help support your ankles. However, they do not offer a lot of arch support or cushioning and are not the best choice for daily workouts.
