How to Use Sleeping Pads When Hiking

On your next hiking trip, a sleeping pad can mean the difference between getting zero sleep and that oh-so-refreshed feeling the next morning. Here are a few ways to use yours pad to stay well-rested.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a type. Sleeping pads come in several versions, although a foam pad or self-inflating pad are generally recommended. Choose one that is compact, lightweight and easy to repair.

    • 2

Store it in your pack. Pads are convenient because they can be strapped on the outer bottom of the pack or inside, just above the sleeping bag. If space is tight, use the various bungee cords or straps located on your pack to secure it.

    • 3

Roll it out. Once you're ready to sleep, place the pad underneath your bag and enjoy the added comfort. Some bags even have clips which attach to the pad itself so you won't roll off while you're sleeping.

    • 4

Use it as a lifesaver. In an emergency, a sleeping pad may be used as a flotation device. Be sure that your fellow hikers are aware of this in case they need to save you.

    • 5

If the temperature drops much lower than you expected, you can use your pad as an additional "blanket" to trap heat inside your bag.

    • 6

If you forget the pillow insert for your sleeping bag, your pad can substitute nicely. You also can use it to elevate an injured limb.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're a restless sleeper, look for a sleeping bag or pad with clips attached to hold these items together. This prevents you from rolling.

  • Remember to pack a patch kit when hiking with a self-inflatable pad. Pads are much sturdier than air mattresses, but they can still tear if not handled carefully.

  • Air mattresses are not well-suited for outdoor use. They may require your carrying a pump and patch kits.
