How to Do a Twisting Pose in Yoga

The twisting pose stretches your back and shoulders. It is best used at the beginning or end of your yoga session. Practicing it at the beginning increases your stretching and flexibility radius for the rest of your practice.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  1. Step 1

    Sit with your legs stretched straight out in front of you, engaging your feet. Straighten your back and open your chest.

  2. Step 2

    Bring your right knee up to your chest and place your right hand behind you.

  3. Step 3

    Keeping your feet flexed and your back straight. Take your left arm and hold your right knee with it. As you begin to inhale, turn your neck and spine, moving deeper into the stretch.

  4. Step 4

    Exhale and hold the position.

  5. Step 5

    Release and return to your starting pose.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat Steps 1 through 5 on the other side.

Tips & Warnings
  • When doing twisting positions, breathe regularly. If you fail to do this, it becomes harder to hold the position. Instead of stretching your muscles, it pushes them.
