The neck release is a yoga pose that might not feel like a yoga pose since it is something you probably do all the time. It is important, however, that you learn to correctly release your neck to relieve the tension most of us hold there.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  1. Step 1

Stand in mountain pose. Keep your legs tight but don't lock them. Allow your arms to hang loosely by your side.

  2. Step 2

As you inhale, bring one arm up and over your head to the opposite ear. Gently grab the arm while you lift and stretch your neck, being careful not to pull.

  3. Step 3

Exhale and bring the arm back up and over your head. Then bring your arm back down into mountain pose.

  4. Step 4

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 on the other side.

Tips & Warnings
  • When doing the neck release, alternate sides for a few breaths each. It is a good position for tension relief, allowing you a pause in-between other, more difficult positions.
  • Remember to practice yoga breathing. Breathing properly helps beginners pay more attention to holding the correct pose, which is the hardest part of mastering yoga.
  • Do not ever pull your neck while performing neck exercises and stretches. These are meant to release tension, not pull at the muscles.
