How to Do a Forward Fold in Yoga

Many people probably do forward folds all the time and do not even realize that they are doing yoga. The forward fold begins in the mountain pose and stretches your hamstrings while working your quad muscles. It is a good position to start a yoga session, as it stretches much of your body.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  1. Step 1

    Start a forward fold in the mountain pose, with your feet approximately shoulder-width apart. Keep your legs straight but not tightened.

  2. Step 2

    Extend your arms outward. Swoop them out and over your head while inhaling.

  3. Step 3

    On the exhale, drop your arms and touch the palms of your hand to the floor, bending your body from the hips.

  4. Step 4

    Drop your head and let it hang. Hold the forward fold for 3 breaths as you continue to inhale and exhale.

  5. Step 5

    Return to the mountain pose.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you find it hard to keep your legs straight and your palms on the floor. slightly bend your knees. Straighten your legs as you become more flexible. You also can cross your arms at the lowest point possible instead of touching the floor.
  • Breathe as if you are sipping through a straw. Continue inhaling and exhaling while holding poses.
