Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Do nothing if the infant is coughing. Babies are good at clearing their own airways through coughing. Pick up your child, keep them upright but do nothing else. Do not bang on their backs, as this could push the object further down into the lungs. If your baby stops coughing, starts making a wheezing sound or starts to turn blue, white, or gray, move on to Step 2.
Step2
Before doing anything else, yell for someone to call 911, even if no one is with you. You never know who may hear you.
Step3
Put your hand over the infant's face. Extend your fingers ear to ear. Your hand should go chin to jaw, but do not cover the mouth. Flip your baby over your forearm, bringing your baby down to a 30- to 45-degree angle so gravity can help you. Support your baby on your thigh.
Step4
Using the heel of your free hand and letting your fingers crown the head, slap your baby's back firmly 5 times.
Step5
Sandwich your baby between both your arms and hands and flip him over so he is face up on the opposite arm. Your arm should support his head and neck and you use gravity to keep your baby at a 30- to 45-degree angle.
Step6
Draw a mental line between the nipples. Using your 3 fingers, thrust your fingers into your baby's chest 5 times.
Step7
Start CPR if your baby loses consciousness. In between chest compressions, check if the object is in the mouth before you give puffs of air. Give 5 cycles of CPR before calling 911 if they have not been called.
