How to Care for a Bayonet Knife

Bayonet knives are blades you can attach to the end of a firearm. The story is they originated during the seventeenth century in Bayonne, France. The first type of bayonet was one which attached directly to the muzzle of the gun, but by 1855, they had become small swords which attached under the barrel of the gun. This is generally how they are available now, except as knives rather than swords.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Sharpen your bayonet knife as frequently as is needed. If you put off regular sharpening, this knife loses much of its utility.

  2. Step 2

Keep your knife stored (often in a sheath or scabbard) when it isn't attached to your weapon. Avoid exposure to the elements to lengthen the life of your bayonet knife.

  3. Step 3

Clean and thoroughly dry your knife after any use. A rag and a mild metal polish will do.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the knife has a wooden handle, you must give it special attention to keep the wood from rotting. Don't let the knife sit in water for any prolonged period of time and keep it dry whenever possible.
  • Some bayonet knives, notably the M7 model, have an optional handgrip attachment. This can help reduce contact between your hands and the knife, which may help keep oil and grime from your skin off the knife.
  • While you may be experienced with the bayonet knife, remember that others around you might not be. Keep your eyes on your weapon so that it doesn't fall into inexperienced hands.
