How to Check Car Engine Coolant Levels

Your car's engine coolant dissipates any excess heat the engine produces when running. This keeps your engine from over heating in the summer and freezing in the winter. Maintaining the proper level of coolant in your car can be done in a few simple steps. Follow these steps after your car has been sitting overnight.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Turn the engine off. If the car has been running, allow it to sit for 15 to 20 minutes to cool off.

  2. Step 2

Open the hood of the car and secure it with the prop rod.

  3. Step 3

Locate the coolant recovery jug and check the level of coolant. If the level falls below the minimum indicator, fill it with a 50/50 mixture of coolant to bring the level above the minimum indicator line. Most coolants available for purchase are a 50/50 mixture, and will indicate this on the packaging. If you choose to purchase a concentrate, mix it with water in a 50/50 ratio.

  4. Step 4

Remove the radiator cap by pushing down and turning counterclockwise.

  5. Step 5

Look into the radiator filler neck. The level of coolant should be at the top of the neck. If necessary, fill with a 50/50 mixture of coolant.

  6. Step 6

Replace the cap back onto the radiator by turning clockwise.

  7. Step 7

Start and idle the engine. Allow the engine to come up to the normal operating temperature.

  8. Step 8

Recheck the coolant level in the recovery jug now that the car is warm. When the fluid heats up it will expand and levels will change. Fill the jug with fluid to bring it to or just below the maximum level indicator. Do not open the radiator cap while it is hot.

  9. Step 9

Remove the prop rod and close the hood of the car securely.

Tips & Warnings
  • Inspect hoses for leaks. Tighten hose clamps or replace leaking hoses if necessary.
  • Check radiator cap and seal for damage. Replace with a proper pressure rating cap if necessary. Clean any corrosion on radiator cap.
  • Never open the radiator cap on a hot or overheated engine. Serious burns could result. Always allow the engine to cool for 15 to 20 minutes before opening a radiator cap.
  • Do not add cold coolant to an overheated radiator. Allow it to cool first.
  • Add any water only in small amounts. Large amounts of water will reduce the freeze protection of the coolant.
