Things You'll Need:
- Jack
- Safety stands
- Socket wrenches
- Wrenches
- Allen wrenches
- Transmission fluid pump
-
Step 1
Park the car on level ground. Start the engine and idle the car for at least 1 minute. Apply the parking brake.
-
Step 2
Apply and hold the foot brake. At the same time, select each gear momentarily, ending with selector lever in park.
-
Step 3
Wipe the dipstick and surrounding area clean so that no dirt enters the transmission.
-
Step 4
Remove the dipstick and touch it to determine if the transmission fluid is hot or warm. If you cannot hold it comfortably between your fingers, the fluid is hot.
-
Step 5
Wipe the dipstick with a clean rag and place it back in the tube until fully seated.
-
Step 6
Pull the dipstick back out and check to see where the transmission fluid level falls on the indicator. If you have determined the fluid to be hot, the level must fall in the hot area of the indicator at or below the full mark. If the fluid is warm, the level should rise above the add mark in the warm area of the indicator.
-
Step 7
Using a funnel, add small amounts of transmission fluid. Check the dipstick level after each addition. Continue filling and checking until proper level of fluid is indicated.
-
Step 1
Raise the car with a jack and support it with jack safety stands.
-
Step 2
Remove the filler plug and determine the level of the transmission fluid. It should be at the bottom of the fill hole or no less than 3/16 of an inch below.
-
Step 3
Fill the fluid to proper level. The easiest way to do this is to use a transmission fluid pump or a squeeze bottle and tube.
-
Step 4
Put the filler plug back onto the transmission and wipe up any spilled transmission fluid.
-
Step 5
Lower the car. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.
