How to Add Engine Coolant to a Car

Most of today's cars utilize a coolant recovery jug, typically located on the front right or left hand side of the radiator. This jug holds the coolant overflow from the radiator. If the level of your coolant is lower then the minimum indicator line on the jug, you must add engine coolant.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Start your car and allow the engine to come up to normal operating temperature.

  2. Step 2

    Open the hood of your car and secure it with the prop rod. Locate your coolant recovery jug.

  3. Step 3

    Check if your coolant level is below the minimum indicator on the jug. Remove the cap from the top of the jug if your level is too low.

  4. Step 4

    Using a funnel, add a 50/50 mixture of engine coolant to the jug to bring the level up to somewehere between the minimum and maximum indicators. You can purchase the fluid as a 50/50 mixture. If you choose to buy a concentrate, mix it with water in a 50/50 ratio. Replace the cap on the coolant jug.

  5. Step 5

    Check the engine compartment of your car for any visible signs of a coolant leak.

  6. Step 6

    Release the prop bar and close the hood of your car if you see no signs of coolant leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • An empty coolant jug indicates a possible coolant leak.
  • Hot coolant can cause burns. When checking your coolant level, don't make contact with the hot coolant.
  • Most engine coolants are toxic. Wipe up any spills and do not leave coolant containers open.
