Your car's front axles transmit power from the differential to the front wheels. The axle boots hold the grease or lube for the constant velocity joints which allow the front wheels to turn and drive the car at the same time. These boots also serve to keep debris out of the constant velocity joints.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack
  • Safety stands
  1. Step 1

Turn your car engine off and apply the parking brake. Jack up the front end of the car and secure with safety stands.

  2. Step 2

Inspect the axle boots which are located at the end of each axle that goes from the differential to the front wheels. Look for any signs of grease or tears in the boot material.

  3. Step 3

Turn the front wheels of the car from one side to the other. Rotate the wheels to allow you to see any hidden rips or tears in the axle boots.

  4. Step 4

Make sure the boots move freely and do not bind when turned. Listen for any noises the axle boots make when being turned. They should turn quietly without any loud noises

  5. Step 5

Repair or replace any damaged axle boots or joints that your check revealed.

  6. Step 6

Remove the safety stands and lower the car to the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Look for any grease covering the frame around the axle boot. This is a good indication of a tear or a hole in the boot.
  • Never get under a raised car without first securing it with safety stands.
