The Split Basic aerobic exercise--also known as the Broken Step and the Basic Lunge--is a variation of the Basic Right to Left step aerobic exercise. Like that exercise, you tap your toes on the floor behind you before stepping down.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stand in front of a step aerobic platform with your feet together and your toes pointing toward the long side of the platform.

  2. Step 2

Step up onto the platform with your right foot and then your left.

  3. Step 3

Tap the floor behind you with your toes on your right foot, and then bring your foot back up onto the platform. Next, tap the floor behind you with the toes on your left foot and bring your foot back up onto the platform.

  4. Step 4

Move back down to the floor by stepping down with your right foot and then your left, so that you are back in your starting position.

  5. Step 5

Repeat the exercise on 8 beats, accompanied by upbeat music, for a rigorous cardiovascular workout.

Tips & Warnings
  • Maintain good posture while doing step aerobics. Hold your chest high, keep your upper body relaxed and keep your abs tight.
  • Remember to warm up and cool down before and after performing step aerobics.
  • Don't bow your head while performing step aerobics. If you need to look at your feet to see where you are stepping, just glance down for a second, but keep your head up and maintain a forward-facing head position.
