Step aerobics can give you a low-impact, cardiovascular workout without your having to leave home. The Basic Right to Left step aerobic exercise is the first move a beginner should perform when learning step aerobics.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position the platform horizontally in front of you. Stand in front of the step, with your feet together and with your toes pointing toward the long side of the step.

  2. Step 2

Step onto the platform with your right foot. Then bring your left foot up onto the platform.

  3. Step 3

Move your right foot back down to the floor, followed by your left foot.

  4. Step 4

Repeat the exercise bringing your right foot onto the platform, followed by your left foot, and so on.

  5. Step 5

Alternate the exercise by beginning with your left foot and then following with your right.

Tips & Warnings
  • Maintain good posture while doing step aerobics. Keep your chest high with your upper body relaxed. Avoid lunging forward as you step up onto the platform.
  • Wear shoes with good arch support and avoid baggy clothing when doing step aerobics.
  • If you are using an adjustable platform, a height of 4 inches off the ground is a good start for beginners. Raise it higher as you advance.
  • Warm up and cool down before and after performing step aerobic exercises.
  • Resist the urge to bounce as you're stepping up and down from the platform. Make sure all your steps are well-defined but soft, flat-footed steps.
