In rhythm tap, dancers use only their legs and their feet to make a louder, more grounded sound. Rhythm techniques in tap dance are movements with a specific beat and style. Any basic tap dance class teaches students basic rhythm techniques.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place your feet flat on the floor, shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees slightly bent and your back straight. Good posture is essential in performing precise rhythm tap steps.

  2. Step 2

Tap out a beat with one foot. Make the beat fast or slow. Keep the beat in your head as you continue. Keep the beat in sets of 8. Rhythm tap steps begin a half-beat before the first count.

  3. Step 3

Add combinations and moves that only require movement from the waist down. Keep the beat going with your feet in between combinations and steps so you stay on the beat and your steps remain coordinated.

  4. Step 4

Mix in variations of moves, steps and combinations to add pizzazz to the performance. Start with the easier moves before adding any difficult combinations.

  5. Step 5

Practice the rhythm steps slowly and work up to a fast-paced performance.

Tips & Warnings
  • Strike the floor hard and make loud, distinct sounds.
  • Any time you perform rhythm techniques in tap, wear tap shoes and use a hardwood floor.
