In addition to all of the factors that are involved in preparing for a backpacking trip, you must be physically up to the task. Since backpacking requires strength and endurance, you should train for a backpacking trip. Here's how.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Wear your gear. When training, you will have the opportunity to adjust your backpack and your boots so that they fit you properly. By breaking in your boots, you won't have to deal with any blisters or spots rubbing your feet on the trail. You will have the chance to adjust your backpack so that it fits comfortably.

  2. Step 2

Practice hiking with 5 to 10 pounds in your pack. Don't start out with a full pack. As you get accustomed the weight, increase it by five pounds and then another five pounds. Keep this up until you've reached the weight of a full pack.

  3. Step 3

Hike for several weeks in similar terrain. Choose a nearby location that is much like the terrain you'll be backpacking in. Hike this area for up to 3 months before your trip.

Tips & Warnings
  • When training, if you notice any issues with your boots or your pack that you can't resolve, purchase new ones. Comfort is essential when you go backpacking.
