1
Pack the heaviest items close to your body. The closer you can get these items to the centerline of your body, the more comfortable you will be. This will prevent these items from shifting and upsetting the balance of your backpack.
-
2
Consider when you're going to use items and pack accordingly. For example, if something is not going to be used until evening, place it at the bottom of the backpack.

3
Strap your rain gear to the outside of your backpack. If it gets wet, who cares?

Tips & Warnings
With an internally framed backpack, you can insert your sleeping bag and your sleeping pad at the bottom of your pack.
If you're carrying an externally framed backpack, don't strap your sleeping bag at the bottom of the pack. You will risk getting it wet. It should be packed toward the top.
