When you're planning a backpacking trip, you'll need a lot of supplies. Often, just being without one necessary item can ruin your adventure. So it's important to create a backpacking gear checklist.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Food and cooking items
  • Clothing
  • Tent with poles and stakes
  • Sleeping bed and pad
  • Map
  • Water filter
  • First aid supplies
  1. Step 1

Select a sturdy backpack for all your supplies. The backpack should be comfortable to carry and should fit your body type. Additionally, the backpack should be large enough to carry all of your supplies. If you are going to be doing any day hiking, take a daypack.

  2. Step 2

Add shelter to your list. You will need a tent with poles and stakes. Many tents are made of lightweight nylon and are perfect for taking on a backpacking trip. You'll need a tarp to place under your tent. Also bring a sleeping bag and a sleeping pad.

  3. Step 3

Bring cooking utensils and food. A small cook stove and fuel is necessary to prepare simple meals. Along with this, you'll need to bring a pot, a pan, matches or lighters, flatware and a cup for each person. The food you bring should not be perishable and should be easy to prepare. Pack the food in a container that is resistant to animals and insects.

  4. Step 4

Bring a water filter. Without one, you can't be sure that the water you're drinking is safe. There are many types of these available that are particularly suited and designed for backpacking.

  5. Step 5

Add clothing to the list. A hat and sunglasses are "must-have's" in order to protect you from the sun. Bring gloves, jackets, boots, underwear and rain gear, too.

  6. Step 6

Remember the hiking poles. Having these along will help reduce stress to your ankles, hips and knees.

  7. Step 7

Know where you are. Bring a topography map of the area you intend to visit and a compass. Bring your cell phone, but first make sure it is fully charged.

  8. Step 8

Pack first aid supplies. It's vital to be prepared for an emergency on the trail.
