You've just finished a long hike in warm weather, and now it's time to cool your body. Knowing how to cool down effectively can make your overall hiking experience more enjoyable. Here are some tips for cooling down after a hike.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Change into a clean, dry shirt. Chances are the shirt you wore is wet from sweat. Grab a dry, loose-fitting shirt to put on.

  2. Step 2

Take off your hiking boots. Cool feet make your whole body feel much cooler. Bring a pair of sandals to change into and cool those dogs off.

  3. Step 3

Find a cool place. A nearby creek, lake or stream with cool water should be surrounded by a cooler air temperature. Find a shady spot to cool off in and get out of the sun.

  4. Step 4

Do some light stretching exercises. Stretch your leg and back muscles to remove the tension that built up during your hike.

  5. Step 5

Grab a cold refreshing drink. Any cold beverage can cool your body down after a hot day of hiking. Drink electrolyte replacement beverages to replenish salts and potassium that you lost while sweating.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cooling down isn't just for after the hike. Cool down at any time during your hike by slowing to a stroll for 4 to 5 minutes.
